Best of Book Riot 7 Great Novels The New York Times Panned This week we’re running some of our favorite and most popular posts from our first three months.   __________________________ A recent interest in book reviews as a genre led me to  Books of the Century:  A Hundred Years of Authors, Ideas and Literature  from  The New York Times Book Review. This volume collects notable pieces from the first 100 years of the  NYTBR, including reviews, impressions, letters to the editor, and literary essays. Its a fascinating look at how book coverage, taste, and discussion have changed since the  NYTBR  launched in the fall of 1896. Of particular interest are the things the review got wrong. Commendably, the editors of  Books of the Century  not only chose to include critical missteps, but they even highlighted them (calling them Oops! entries). Here are a few highlights: __________________________ On Henry James  The Golden Bowl: It seems to me to present Mr. James at his worstWe find, standing for subtlety, a kind of restless finicking inquisitiveness, a flutter of aimless conjecture, such as might fall to a village spinster in a department store. Mr. James, the prolix, the incoherent, the indecisive; it is of this Mr. James that we carry an impression from The Golden Bowl. Thoughts: Aside from the shift from the first-person singular to the first-person plural, the notable feature here is that the reviewer seems to mistake James interest with that of the characters in  The Golden Bowl. To my mind, the aimless conjecture and indecisive descriptors are aptly applied to the characters rather than James himself. Forgetting that the authors concerns and interests do not necessarily align with the concerns and interests of the characters is a common reviewing mistakeand rather refreshing to see from the Grey Lady. __________________________ On E.M. Forsters  Howards End: As a social philosopher, evidently, Mr. Edward M. Forster has not arrived at very positive convictions. He evinces neither power nor inclination to come to grips with any vital human problem. Thoughts: Ah, the good old days when one could chastise a writer for not coming to grips with any vital human problem unironically (and use clichés like come to grips with impunity). Those who love Forster love him in part, I think, for his lack of moral certainty or judgment. That this reviewer expected an identifiable social philosophy tells us much about the moment: just seven years later, criticism in this vein would be seen as woefully naive. __________________________ On Virginia Woolfs  The Voyage Out: This English novel, by an English writer, gives promise in its opening chapters of much entertainment. Later, the reader is disappointed. That the author knows her London in its most interesting aspects there can be no doubt. But aside from a certain clevernesswhich, being all in one key, palls on one after going through a hundred pages of itthere is little in this offering to make it stand out from the ruck fo mediocre novels which make far less literary pretension. Thoughts: You can be smug. You can be condescending. And you can even be wrong. But you cant be all three at once. Or so I thought. __________________________ On J.D. Salingers  The Catcher in the Rye: This Salinger, hes a short story guy. And he knows how to write about kids. This book though, its too long. Gets kind of monotonous. And he shouldve cut out a lot about these jerks and all that crumby school. They depress me. Thoughts: It has yet to be shown that satirical impersonation is a viable mode of literary criticism. Usually, the writer comes off as an ironical jackass; this case is no exception. Still, there is a whisper of truth about Salingers gift for the short-story, not as a mark against  Catcher, but as a foreshadowing of his long publishing drought as he struggled to contain his opus about The Glass family. The unruliness of the novel form itself seemed to be a part of the problem, and this reviewer presciently suggested he stick to the short story. __________________________ On Joseph Hellers  Catch-22: Catch-22 has much passion, comic and fervent, but it gasps for want of craft and sensibility. If Catch-22 were intended as a commentary novel, such sideswiping of character and action might be taken care of by thematic control. It fails here because half its incidents are farcical and fantastic. Thoughts: First, Im not sure you can gasp for want. Second, slamming  Catch-22  for craft and sensibility is a little like panning a Ferrari because theres not much trunk space: it is just completely and utterly beside the damn point. Third, how delicious that a book criticized for lack of thematic control would itself be a symbol for all the contradictions of late 20th American life. Whats that phrase for either way youre wrong? __________________________ On Betty Friedans  The Feminine Mystique: Sweeping generalities, in which this book necessarily abounds, may hold a certain amount of truth but often obscure the deeper issues. It is superficial to blame the culture and its handmaidens, the womens magazines, as she does. What is to stop a woman who is interested in national and international affairs from reading magazines that deal with those subjects? Thoughts: These would be only moderately obtuse points coming from a freshman. Coming from a NY Times reviewer, they are embarrassing. Also, what is more superficial than a leading, block-headed question that sounds like an obvious truth but actually demonstrates the problem? __________________________ On Anthony Burgess  A Clockwork Orange: With his tongue popping in and out of his cheek, Mr. Burgess satirizes both the sociological and the penal approach to juvenile crime, literary proletarianism, and anything else in his path. Written in a pseudo-criminal cant, A Clockwork Orange is an interesting tour-de-force, though not up to the level of the authors previous two novels. Thoughts: Besides not quite liking  Clockwork  enough, this seems pretty right to me, though the interesting tour-de-force is a frustrated phrase. I suspect that satires are particularly easy for a critic to get wrong, since much of what a good satire accomplishes is only apparent in hindsight. __________________________ Jeff ONeal is the editor of Book Riot. Alternatively Matthew asserts, â€Å"Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread will give a stone? (Matt 7:11). In the time of Jesus, the limestones were the same shape and color of bread. In Luke the serpent or eel resembled fish. In Jewish law the eel would be considered unclean and not fit for consumption. This passage stresses, â€Å"An earthly father will not give a son who begs of him something for sustenance (a fish or an egg) something similar-looking, but which is a possible source of evil to him† (Luke X 914). Just as an earthly father will protect their child, our Heavenly Father and His infinite wisdom will only answer prayers in an infinite way. He will give to them the extreme gift of the Holy Spirit from those that seek it. 12 Or if a child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion (Luke 9:12). When a scorpion is curled up it is a dangerous small animal. If a father gave his son a scorpion instead of an egg and the scorpion stung him, the sting would be extremely painful and quite possibly lethal (Barclay 271). The metaphor of the scorpion and an egg clearly shows the deception of how a gift can ultimately be deceiving and evil. Man fails to see how these greater gifts will affect his life. In this passage about the scorpion and the egg Jesus is trying to convey the importance of the Holy Spirit. With the assassination of President Lincoln, the presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southerner named Andrew Johnson. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate Presidents. Over time there has been a controversial debate as to whether Johnson deserved to be impeached, or if it was an unconstitutional attempt by Congress to infringe upon the presidents authority. The impeachment of Andrew Johnson was politically motivated. The spirit of the Jacksonian democracy inspired Andrew Johnson. In 1857, Johnson was then elected to represent Tennessee in the US Senate. While serving in the Senate, Johnson became an advocate of the Homestead Bill, which was opposed by most Southern Democrats and their†¦show more content†¦According to the Republicans, this was a clear violation of the law. Around the same time Johnson violated the Tenure of Office act by removing Stanton and not receiving the Senates approval. With these two violations committ ed by Johnson the Judiciary Committee voted to submit a report recommending impeachment.7 The House of Representatives drafted eleven articles of impeachment. The first eight articles described specific actions by the President that violated the Tenure of Office Act. The ninth article charged the President with trying to persuade an army officer to violate the 1867 Army Appropriation Act. American Exodus by James N. Gregory - 557 Words

In American Exodus, James N. Gregory presents the struggles and misconceptions of the Okie migrant, their defiance to cultural oppression and the change they brought. To analyze the brunt force of the Dust Bowl and the Depression of the Great Plain region; he traces the movement from route 66, evaluates the reception in California, and shows how the migrants both accommodated and left from the culture of the Golden State. Throughout the book, he dismisses many of the stereotypes created by John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath (1939), and Dorothea Lange’s messages in photography. In doing so, Gregory presents a social wave, from the norm of stereotyping and the defiance of culture itself by bringing about unity in the form of narration of events and sub-topics. Furthermore, this event is brought to the hands of historians and future historians, a subject that often ignored in American history that has impacted various states including California. The author’s noti on is that â€Å"The Dust Bowl migration movement teaches us about the ways American culture is transformed through relocation.† Gregory’s claim is that without migration; our sense of ideals, mannerisms, and literature would not be the same. It is through the Okies’ persona, morals, and experience that an identity is established and therefore, a landmark in culture. Gregory organizes his content in sections, Part 1: â€Å"Migration and Resettlement† and Part 2: â€Å"The Okie Subculture† to make his point. Vladimir Lenin, the first leader of the Soviet Union, once stated â€Å"A lie told often enough becomes the truth. † In times of inclusive deception, it is only innate for humanity to be blinded by the truth in a vast sea of lies to the point in which the act of telling the truth becomes revolutionary. In George Orwell’s 1984, society is led by the fabrication of the truth in an attempt to create a perfect world. In the novel 1984, the Party’s slogan, â€Å"Who controls the past controls the future. By altering history, the Party has absolute power of the present, limiting the psychological independence of its subjects by controlling their interpretations of the past. Individuals are forbidden to keep any account of their past, such as photographs and documents, and all recordings, great or small fade â€Å"away into a shadow-world in which, finally, even the date of the year is uncertain. † Therefore, the members of the society are willing to believe in any â€Å"truth† the Party feeds them.Due to the reliance of authority, humanity would become highly infantile and foolish. Just as infants depend on their parents’ guidance, all of human kind would act as little children, relying on authority to direct them to the truth. People would virtually have no memory of the past, so they would have no experience of emotions and would not know what emotions truly are. A Brief History of the Tower of London If you watch a British entertainer on their home soil make a joke about the Royal Family, youll probably see them follow it up with a quip like oh, they’ll take me to the Tower! They dont need to say which tower. Everyone growing up in the mainstreams of British culture hears about The Tower, a building as famous and central to the national myths of England as the White House is to the myths of the United States. Built on the north bank of the River Thames in London and once a home of royalty, a jail for prisoners, a site for executions and a storehouse for an army, the Tower of London now contains the Crown Jewels, guardians nicknamed Beefeaters (they arent keen on the name) and legend securing ravens. Dont be confused by the name: the Tower of London is actually a huge castle-complex formed by centuries of addition and alteration. Described simply, the nine hundred-year-old White Tower forms a core surrounded, in concentric squares, by two sets of powerful walls. Studded with towers and bastions, these walls enclose two inner areas called wards that are full of smaller buildings. This is the story of its origins, creation and the near continual development which has kept it at the center of an, albeit changing, national focus for nearly a millenia, a rich and bloody history that easily attracts over two million visitors every year. Origins of the Tower of London While the Tower of London as we know it was built in the eleventh century, the history of fortification on the site stretches back into Roman times, when stone and wooden structures were built and marshland reclaimed from the Thames. A massive wall was created for defence, and this anchored the later Tower. However, the Roman fortifications declined after the Romans left England. Many Roman structures had their stones robbed away for use in later buildings (finding these Roman remains in other structures is a good source of evidence and very rewarding), and what remained in London was likely foundations. Williams Stronghold When William I successfully conquered England in 1066 he ordered the construction of a castle in London, using the site of the old Roman fortifications as a base. In 1077 he added to this stronghold by ordering the construction of a huge tower, the Tower of London itself. William died before it was completed in 1100. William needed a large tower partly for protection: he was an invader attempting to take over a whole kingdom, one which needed pacification before it would accept him and his children. While London seems to have been made safe quite quickly, William had to engage in a campaign of destruction in the north, the Harrying, to secure that. However, the Tower was useful in a second way: the projection of royal power wasnt just about walls to hide in, it was about showing status, wealth and strength, and a large stone structure that dominated its surroundings did just that. The Tower of London as Royal Castle Over the next few centuries monarchs added ever more fortifications, including walls, halls and other towers, to an increasingly complex structure which became referred to as The Tower of London. The central tower became known as the ‘White Tower’ after it was whitewashed. On the one hand, every successive monarch needed to build here to demonstrate their own wealth and ambition. On the other hand, several monarchs had need to shelter behind these imposing walls due to conflicts with their rivals (sometimes their own siblings), so the castle remained nationally important and a military keystone in controlling England. From Royalty to Artillery During the Tudor period the use of the Tower began to change, with visits from the monarch declining, but with many important prisoners held there and an increase in the use of the complex as a storehouse for the nation’s artillery. The number of major modifications began to decline, although some were spurred on by fire and naval threats, until changes in warfare meant the Tower became less important as an artillery base. It wasnt that the Tower was any less formidable to the type of people it had been built to defend, but that gunpowder and artillery meant its walls were now vulnerable to new technology, and defences had to take markedly different forms. Most castles suffered a decline in military importance, and instead transformed into new uses. But monarchs were looking for different sorts of accommodation now, palaces, not cold, draughty castles, so visits fell. Prisoners, however, did not require luxury. The Tower of London as National Treasure As the military and government use of the Tower declined, parts were opened up to the general public, until the Tower evolved into the landmark it is today, welcoming over two million visitors annually. Essential to the Gnostic view is the belief that Jesus taught on two levels to his disciples. Openly and publicly, he preached in parables and moral examples of a perennial wisdom that was radical enough to challenge existing tenets of Judaism and the doctrinal foundations of other schools present in the Mediterranean region at the time. Yet, secretly, according to the Gnostics, Jesus also taught his closest students the inner-aspects of the mysteries of God and the universe. Just as the Buddha is believed to have tailored his sermons to address the level of consciousness and moral development of the individuals he was speaking to directly at the time, resulting in different vehicles of salvation constructed according to the needs of the individuals who believed in and practiced the teachings, so too did Jesus in the Gnostic view. This can be seen further in the Gnostics preserving Gospels such as those recorded by Phillip and Thomas that were not accepted by the Orthodoxy in the construction of the New Testament. Critically, the leader of the Orthodox movement is St. Paul, who was not one of the direct disciples duri ng the lifetime of Jesus, but converts to the faith and becomes its most ardent champion historically in the early days of the church following the crucifixion. It can be argued, that if one accepts the distinction between esoteric and exoteric teachings as given by Jesus during his lifetime, that the absence of Paul from these events historically limits him to a textual interpretation of Christianity or encourages him to emphasize that aspect over the esoteric. In contrast are figures such as Simon Magus and Barnabas who represent the magical, mystical aspects of early Christian religion. As Miguel Conner writes in â€Å"The Great Declaration by Simon Magus,† â€Å"Simon Magus was almost universally called the Father of Gnosticism or the Father of All Heresies. Referring to him as the fountainhead of Gnostic ideology is odd, since Orthodox Christianity bragged it preceded Gnosticism yet openly admitted Simon Magus was a contemporary of Jesus...
